Glen Gariff is one of Eastern Cape’s hidden gems. It situated just half an hour North of East London. Even though the town is still going through some developments there’s a lot of joy to be found around here. For starters, the massive game life, which ranges from majestic animals such as giraffes, zebras to impalas and plenty more.
Most backpackers and chalets are situated just a stone’s throw away from the ocean, this is a real treat, not only will you be able to see a school of dolphins cruising, from your door step, you will see whales broaching (I’ve never seen anything more beautiful). We also spotted a dead Humpback whale about a kilometer from where we were staying. So, we took a walk to take closer look. The scientist on site told us that it had died of intestinal problems, which are common at old age.
Where to stay
There’s a lot of options for accommodation, from camping to chalets. Off peak prices are too handsome to not take advantage of. We stayed at a very basic, but incredibly neat house called Breaking Waves, just a two minute walk from the beach.
Where to eat
Even though there’s a handful of restaurants around here, most of them, unfortunately, only open from Wednesday’s until Sunday. We learned about this when we took our empty stomachs to Emerald Vale, one particular Tuesday morning and it was closed! Perhaps to avoid a severe case of hangry (a combination of anger and hunger) it is best you brace yourself for a drive back to East London for a scrumptious meal at whatever place tickles your fancy. For a more pocket friendly option, buy food supplies at Crossways Shopping Centre and cook your own meals.
What do to
We were there for two nights and our activities evolved around cycling and loads of arm exercises, such as lifting wine glasses (I’m just kidding mom!). However, there are activities like quad biking, abseiling, paintball among many. I did spot a surfing corner, though, which I plan to take advantage of in the coming weeks.
This little town is worth revisiting. Himself and myself have resolved to give it another try, if anything for its tranquility and maybe move here. 🙂
